TRANS FAT BAN? – If the FDA follows through, millions of lives will be saved

As reported on CNN, (November 7th, 2013):

‘The Food and Drug Administration today took a step toward potentially eliminating trans fats from the food supply with a preliminary determination they are no longer “generally regarded as safe.”

Trans fats are found in a variety of frozen, canned and baked processed foods. Partially hydrogenated oils are the major dietary source of trans fats in processed food. Trans fats have been linked to an increased risk of heart disease.

If the preliminary determination is finalized, according to the FDA, then partially hydrogenated oils will become food additives subject to premarket FDA approval. Foods with unapproved additives cannot legally be sold.’

WOW! If the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) really intends to follow through with the phasing out of trans fats, this will become the greatest “breakthrough” in advancing the general health of the masses, well … perhaps, since the polio vaccine!

Final removal of trans fats from the GRAS (generally recognized as safe) List, and ultimately from the mass marketing of prepared foods, would prevent untold human suffering from a cascade of diseases and would save the health care system (i.e.: tax payers), billions of dollars over the years.

One only has to quickly review a few of the links to research papers showing the ravages of trans fats upon multiple functions within the human body, in my last blog on the subject,

to realize that the time for its removal is long overdue.

My main concern with the FDA announcement, is the provisional words it uses in its press release, words such as “if”, “potentially eliminating”, and “preliminary determination”.

You can be sure that the multi-billion-dollar fast-food, junk food and prepared food industry sectors will continue to resist the changes every way they can. Trans fats spell massive profits for them!

Will the lobbyists win? Stay tuned.
